Ensure plugs fit outlets properly. Never remove the ground pin (third prong) to fit a two-prong outlet, as this can cause serious electrical shocks. Never force a plug into an outlet, and avoid overloading outlets with too many appliances.

Use the correct current rating for your circuit breakers and fuses. If unsure, have a licensed electrician identify and label the correct size. Always replace fuses with the same rated fuse to prevent electrical hazards.

GFCIs help prevent electrocution in areas where water and electricity meet. They detect current leaks and cut off power quickly, preventing serious shocks. Test GFCIs regularly following the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure proper operation.

Never leave plugged-in appliances where they could fall into water. If an appliance does fall in water, never reach in to pull it out. First, turn off the power at the panel board, then unplug the device. Always have wet appliances checked by a qualified repair professional before use.

Check that bulbs are the correct wattage for each fixture. Replace any bulbs with higher wattage than recommended, and make sure all bulbs are screwed in securely, as loose bulbs can overheat and cause fires.

If an appliance repeatedly blows a fuse, trips a breaker, or delivers a shock, unplug it immediately and have it repaired or replaced. Proper maintenance ensures long-lasting safety.

Space heaters provide supplemental heat. Keep heaters at least 3 feet away from combustible items like bedding, clothing, drapes, and rugs. Never leave heaters unattended, especially in rooms with children, and always turn them off and unplug them when not in use.

Halogen floor lamps operate at high temperatures and can ignite nearby objects. Never place lamps near drapes, clothing, or other flammable items. Turn off lamps when leaving the room for extended periods, and avoid using torchiere lamps in children’s bedrooms or playrooms.
